Thank you, Imagination Library!

Since the kick-off of Eugene’s Imagination Library chapter on Sept. 5, 2014, the program has reached thousands of children in the Eugene area. As of February 5, 2016 we have served 3385 children. The numbers to keep climbing. Each month, wide-eyed youngsters open their mailboxes to find the gift of one free book. We are grateful to all of you who support this effort to help Eugene’s fledgling readers. For those of you who are new to the website, read on to learn more about this exciting program!

What is the Imagination Library?

In 1996, Dolly Parton launched an exciting new effort, Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, to benefit the children of her home county in East Tennessee, USA. Dolly’s vision was to foster a love of reading among her county’s preschool children and their families by providing them with the gift of a specially selected book each month. By mailing high quality, age-appropriate books directly to their homes, she wanted children to be excited about books and to feel the magic that books can create. Moreover, she could ensure that every child would have books, regardless of their family’s income.

The program became so successful by the year 2000 that Dolly decided to make it available for replication to any community willing to partner with her for the benefit of children.  To date, Imagination Library has mailed almost 40,000,000 books to children on three continents.  Statistics and independent reports have shown Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library dramatically improves early childhood literacy for children enrolled in the program. Further studies have shown improved scores during early literacy testing.

All preschool-age children are eligible and free to enroll -

Your gift of $25 is enough to sponsor a year of free reading for a child. Every child, age 0-5, who lives in the City of Eugene, is eligible to enroll. They will receive an age-appropriate book every month, mailed directly to them, until they turn five, absolutely free.  Your gift of $25 or more makes this possible.

How is this possible?

This program for our children is possible because of the generosity of our corporate and individual sponsors; people just like you!  Together, we believe in the power of literacy to change and enrich lives.  Currently, only 50% of incoming kindergartners meet the state benchmarks for early literacy. They are behind, even before they start.  We want to change that. Let’s give children the tools they need to be successful and happy people.
